After Donald Trump reluctantly announced the cancelation of the Republican National Convention, or at least the one to be held in Jacksonville, Florida, Tucker Carlson was so incensed that he wrote an op-ed in which he claimed the COVID-19 responses were all “political” and had nothing to do with people’s health and safety. Politics? In hindsight, we can see now that Carlson’s own initial warnings about the potential danger of the virus was not concern about how it might endanger the lives of Americans, but an exercise in his usual brand of racial politics, this time directed at the Chinese instead of those “dirty” Hispanics “infesting” the country.
As we have come to expect from Trump, ballsy hypocrites like Carlson like to accuse “liberals” of offenses in which they are doubly and triply guilty of: “Dopey liberals with flaccid ideas that you probably had contempt for, but in the end could live with. No, these are radicals. They despise the country they seek to govern. They plan to remake it completely. These people want power with an intensity that you as a normal well-adjusted person cannot even begin to understand. They will do anything for control.”
Oh really? Trump is in trouble precisely because a lot of people think he is not “well-adjusted,” and has radicalized the Republican Party beyond all recognition. The extremist right as exemplified by the Carlsons and Ingrahams of the world despise anyone with an ounce of simple human decency, feeding the paranoia of the white nationalist minority with their pathetic “grievances,” and they excercise totalitarian “control” of the message on their unabashedly unfair and unbalanced “news” network. “If Democrats take both the Senate and the White House, and they could, you will not recognize America a year from now.” Oh please, that can’t happen soon enough. The vast majority in this country don’t “recognize” what they are seeing right now.
Meanwhile Trump’s decision to send federal “troops” to Seattle is pure political theater. Seattle didn’t need the “help” of Border Patrol or ICE thugs to clear-out CHOP from Capitol Hill; the police did it all by themselves in a matter of hours (so much for “violent” protest). Now we are learning that these thugs from DHS were already secretly implanted in the city during the Fourth of July weekend, and no city official or local law enforcement agency had been informed. Of course nothing happened on the holiday weekend, and frankly little if nothing has happened here in quite a while. You might see rather small gatherings on the weekends on the street, or at City Hall during the day, but the city is hardly “under siege” with “liberals” and "violent protesters" running amuck. It just is not true, contrary to what the politics-playing idiots on Fox News tell you.
So why is Trump sending “troops” to Seattle when there is no need for them? Pure political theater to leave the “impression” of “chaos” in an “ultra-liberal” city. Announcing the dispatching DHS goons to places like Seattle is nothing more than fodder for the base, because they think anything Trump does is “rational.” Nothing Trump says or does is rational, but whatever it is that he thinks will save his political skin. Even his belated recognition of Florida’s COVID-19 explosion is driven by the realization that he (and Ron DeSantis) have lost control of the message because they played politics with the virus, and lost. And people like Carlson? Hypocrites tend to be losers too.
Naturally, the next day those frigging idiots in Capitol Hill are "rioting." What is the point? These people need to assess what is happening in this city, and continued actions by people with too much time on their hands that appear to have no relation to local realities (or other cities, for that matter), only seems to be people acting out their juvenile delinquency fantasies. They do not advance any "message" beyond that of fodder for right-wing media.
